If you're planning your first ski trip, insurance might not be the most exciting part of your preparation — but it's one of the most important. Beginner skiers are actually more likely to sustain injuries than experienced skiers, making appropriate insurance even more critical.

Why Beginners Need Good Ski Insurance

Counterintuitively, beginner skiers have higher injury rates than intermediate and advanced skiers on groomed resort terrain. The reasons are straightforward:

  • Falls are more frequent during the learning process
  • Body position and technique aren't established, leading to uncontrolled falls
  • Beginners may not be able to control speed as effectively, leading to collisions
  • Equipment may not be optimally fitted (beginner hire equipment)

The most common beginner ski injuries are wrist fractures, coccyx injuries (tailbone from sitting falls), and knee strains. None of these are catastrophic injuries, but all require medical attention — and at an international ski destination, even minor medical treatment costs money.

What Cover Does a First-Time Skier Need?

For Domestic NZ Skiing (First-Timers at Coronet Peak, Cardrona, etc.)

**What you need**: Domestic travel insurance with snow sports cover.

**Key benefits**: - Helicopter evacuation cover (ACC doesn't cover this) - Equipment hire costs if hire equipment is damaged - Trip cancellation if you injure yourself before the trip

You don't need off-piste cover or heli-ski cover on your first trip. Standard on-piste cover is entirely appropriate for a first-time resort skier.

For International Skiing (Japan, Canada, Europe)

**What you need**: Comprehensive international travel insurance with snow sports add-on.

**Key benefits**: - Unlimited overseas medical cover (the most important element) - Equipment cover for hire or personal equipment - Trip cancellation - 24/7 emergency assistance

For a beginner heading to Japan or Canada for the first time, the standard snow sports add-on from any of the recommended providers is appropriate. You don't need off-piste or heli-ski upgrades.

Choosing the Right Level of Cover

**Standard Snow Sports Add-On**: Appropriate for resort skiing on groomed runs. This is the right choice for beginners.

**Snow Sports+ or Adventure Plan**: Only necessary if you plan specific advanced activities — off-piste, heli-skiing, etc. As a first-time skier, you'll be on groomed runs — no need for this upgrade.

**Equipment Cover**: If you're hiring equipment at the resort, the hire cost component of equipment cover is relevant. The hire shop's own insurance may cover damage to hire equipment, but personal liability for damaged hire gear can be an issue — check what the resort's hire terms include.

Top Beginner Ski Destinations for Kiwis

**Domestic**: - **Cardrona Alpine Resort**: Excellent beginner facilities with dedicated learner areas - **Coronet Peak**: Well-serviced beginner terrain and Happy Valley at The Remarkables - **Mt Ruapehu (Whakapapa)**: Good learner facilities at the North Island's largest resort

**International**: - **Niseko, Japan**: Gentle lower mountain terrain plus excellent ski school programs. Japanese ski instructors are patient and methodical — ideal for beginners - **Courchevel, France**: Extensive beginner terrain in the Three Valleys, excellent ski school - **Oberstaufen, Austria**: Gentle Alpine terrain ideal for beginners with good ski school infrastructure
