Do I Need Travel Insurance for Skiing in New Zealand?

"I don't need travel insurance for NZ — I have ACC." It's one of the most common misconceptions among New Zealand skiers. While ACC is a genuinely valuable system that covers much of the cost of injury treatment in New Zealand, it leaves significant gaps that domestic ski travel insurance fills.

What ACC Covers at NZ Ski Fields

ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) is New Zealand's no-fault accident compensation scheme. For ski injuries occurring in New Zealand, ACC covers:

  • Emergency treatment costs
  • GP visits related to the injury
  • Hospital treatment (public system)
  • Physiotherapy (with limits)
  • Some income compensation during recovery
  • Home help (in serious cases)

This is meaningful coverage — a broken leg at Coronet Peak that requires emergency treatment and surgery could cost $15,000–$25,000 to treat, most of which ACC covers.

What ACC Does NOT Cover

This is where most Kiwis are surprised:

**Helicopter Evacuation**: ACC does not cover the cost of helicopter evacuation from a ski field. Helicopter rescue in NZ costs $3,000–$10,000+ depending on the rescue complexity and duration. This cost falls entirely on the injured person without specific insurance.

**Equipment Loss or Damage**: ACC has nothing to do with your skis, board, boots, or equipment. If your bag is stolen from the ski field car park or your skis are damaged, ACC is irrelevant.

**Trip Cancellation**: If you injure yourself at home before your ski trip and can't travel, ACC covers your injury treatment but not your non-refundable accommodation, lift passes, or travel costs.

**Emergency Dental**: Ski falls can cause dental injuries. ACC covers some dental treatment, but limits apply.

**Accommodation Costs**: If your injury means you need to stay longer than planned or can't return home on your scheduled date, ACC doesn't cover the additional accommodation costs.

Real Scenarios Where Domestic Insurance Matters

**Scenario 1**: You break your ankle at Cardrona, requiring helicopter evacuation to Queenstown Hospital. Cost: ~$8,000 for the helicopter. ACC covers: $0 towards the helicopter cost.

**Scenario 2**: You arrive at Mt Ruapehu to find the lifts closed for three days due to bad weather. You've pre-paid $600 in lift passes and $800 in accommodation. ACC covers: $0 (this is a travel disruption, not an injury).

**Scenario 3**: You injure your knee a week before your Queenstown ski holiday. Non-refundable flights and accommodation: $1,800. ACC covers your knee treatment. Insurance covers: the $1,800 trip cancellation if you have appropriate cover.

What to Look For in Domestic Ski Insurance

When purchasing domestic travel insurance with snow sports cover, prioritise: 1. Helicopter rescue/evacuation cover — the most important gap ACC leaves 2. Equipment cover — appropriate limits for your gear 3. Trip cancellation — particularly important if you have non-refundable prepaid costs 4. Piste closure cover — valuable for pre-paid lift passes if weather disrupts your plans
