Off-Piste Insurance

Off-Piste Insurance — Cover Beyond the Boundary Markers

Off-piste skiing is explicitly excluded from standard snow sports add-ons. If you plan to venture beyond resort boundary markers — at Niseko, in the French Alps, or in NZ's Southern Alps — you need specific off-piste cover.

What Off-Piste Cover Includes

Off-piste cover extends your ski insurance to skiing on unmarked, ungroomed terrain outside resort-designated runs. This includes skiing through resort gates at Niseko, off-piste zones at European resorts, and guided backcountry experiences adjacent to ski areas. The cover includes avalanche rescue, emergency evacuation from remote terrain, and medical treatment resulting from off-piste accidents. Most off-piste cover requires the presence of a qualified guide for backcountry (outside resort boundary) skiing to apply.

Avalanche Cover

Avalanche rescue and search operations represent some of the most expensive rescue scenarios in alpine environments. A full avalanche rescue involving specialised teams, dogs, probes, and helicopter support can cost $20,000–$80,000+. Off-piste cover includes avalanche rescue costs within its benefits. This is the primary financial risk that makes off-piste-specific cover essential rather than optional for backcountry skiers.
