New Zealand's 2026 ski season is shaping up to be one of the best in recent years, with early snowfalls across the South Island suggesting strong base depths by the time the main season opens in mid-June. Whether you're planning a day trip to Coronet Peak or a week-long Wanaka ski holiday, here's everything you need to know.

2026 Season Opening Dates

**South Island** - **Coronet Peak** (Queenstown): Opens 13 June 2026 - **The Remarkables** (Queenstown): Opens 13 June 2026 - **Cardrona Alpine Resort** (Wanaka): Opens 13 June 2026 - **Treble Cone** (Wanaka): Opens 27 June 2026 - **Mt Hutt** (Methven, Canterbury): Late June 2026 (TBC) - **Ohau** (Mackenzie): June 2026 - **Porters** (Canterbury): June 2026

Insurance: What You Need Before You Go

Before you book a single lift ticket, make sure your insurance is in order. This is one area where many Kiwi skiers are underinsured — ACC alone is not sufficient coverage for a ski trip.

**What ACC Covers** ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) covers treatment costs for injuries that occur in New Zealand, including ski field injuries. However, ACC does not cover: - Helicopter evacuation costs from a ski field (can cost $3,000–$10,000) - Equipment loss or damage - Trip cancellation costs - Income protection during recovery

**What You Need in Addition to ACC** A domestic travel insurance policy with snow sports cover provides the gaps that ACC leaves: - Evacuation cover - Equipment cover - Trip cancellation and disruption - Extended accommodation if injury prevents travel

For international ski trips, the case for comprehensive travel insurance is even stronger — foreign medical costs can be catastrophic without cover.

South Island vs North Island: Which Should You Choose?

**Queenstown / Wanaka (South Island)**: The premier ski destination for most Kiwis. Four major ski fields (Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona, Treble Cone) within easy driving distance of each other. Queenstown offers world-class accommodation and nightlife; Wanaka provides a more relaxed alternative. Ideal for longer ski holidays.

**Mt Ruapehu (North Island)**: New Zealand's largest ski area, with the unique experience of skiing on an active volcano. More accessible from Auckland and the upper North Island. Suitable for families and those seeking a day trip or weekend ski getaway from Auckland (approximately 4 hours drive).

What to Pack

Essential gear for NZ ski conditions: - Helmet (non-negotiable — many fields now require it) - Quality goggles with UV protection - Layering system: moisture-wicking base, insulating mid-layer, waterproof outer - Sunscreen (UV is intense at altitude, especially in NZ's thin ozone layer) - Lip balm with SPF - Hand warmers for early season cold - Waterproof gloves or mittens

Lift Pass Options for 2026

**Cardrona/Treble Cone Season Pass**: Covers both Wanaka resorts for the full season.
