💡 Insurance Tip

You MUST have Snow Sports+ (Cover-More), Explorer plan (World Nomads), or equivalent specialist cover. Standard ski add-ons explicitly exclude heli-skiing. Book your insurance before booking your heli-ski operator.

Heli-skiing represents the pinnacle of the winter sports experience — accessing untouched powder fields in remote alpine terrain by helicopter, skiing down slopes that no lift or groomed trail could ever reach. For New Zealand adventurers, the country's Southern Alps offer world-class heli-skiing operations, and international destinations like Wanaka's backcountry, Canadian heliskiing provinces, and Himalayan ski expeditions attract dedicated powder hunters.

But heli-skiing also represents the highest-risk ski activity from an insurance perspective, and getting the wrong policy could leave you facing catastrophic costs.

Why Standard Ski Insurance Doesn't Cover Heli-Skiing

Standard snow sports add-ons — the type added to most travel insurance policies — are designed for resort skiing on groomed, patrolled terrain. Heli-skiing operates in a fundamentally different environment: unpatrolled backcountry terrain at significant altitude, accessed by helicopter, with avalanche risk and extremely high rescue costs.

Most insurance providers explicitly exclude heli-skiing from their standard ski add-ons. This exclusion is clearly stated in policy documents, but many travellers discover this only after they've booked their heli-ski experience.

What You Need

Heli-skiing requires specialist cover. In the New Zealand market, the main options are: - **Cover-More Snow Sports+**: Specifically covers guided heli-skiing and off-piste skiing - **World Nomads Explorer Plan**: Covers heli-skiing as part of their adventure sports package

Both require that heli-skiing is conducted through a licensed, professional heli-ski operation with a qualified guide. DIY heli-skiing or operations without licensed guides are not covered by any mainstream insurer.

Costs Without Insurance

A helicopter mountain rescue in New Zealand's Southern Alps costs approximately $3,000–$10,000 per hour. An overseas medical evacuation from a remote backcountry location to an appropriate medical facility can cost $50,000–$200,000. Without appropriate heli-ski insurance, these costs fall entirely on the individual.

Top NZ Heli-Ski Operators

New Zealand's South Island is home to world-class heli-ski operations: - **Harris Mountains Heli-Ski** (Wanaka) — accesses the remote peaks of the Hāwea, Dunstan, and Richardson ranges - **Southern Lakes Heli-Ski** (Queenstown) — multiple zones in the Southern Alps - **Methven Heli-Ski** (Mt Hutt) — central Canterbury backcountry access

All these operations require guests to have appropriate heli-skiing insurance before departure.

Common Exclusions

  • Heli-skiing without qualified guide (all policies)
  • Heli-skiing on standard Snow Sports add-on (most providers)
  • Activities outside licensed heli-ski operations
