The European Alps offer an unparalleled ski experience — hundreds of interconnected resorts, centuries of ski culture, spectacular mountain scenery, and the unique pleasure of skiing across international borders. For New Zealand skiers making the journey to Europe, the experience is one that typically produces lifelong memories.

The Main Alpine Destinations for Kiwis

Switzerland Switzerland offers some of the world's most iconic ski terrain. Zermatt (under the Matterhorn), Verbier, and St Moritz are the headline destinations, combining exceptional skiing with Swiss-level services and prices. Switzerland is expensive but genuinely special.

France The French Alps offer the best combination of ski terrain scale, value, and lifestyle. Chamonix (for serious skiers), Val d'Isère/Tignes (Espace Killy — one of Europe's great ski domains), and the Three Valleys (Val Thorens, Courchevel, Méribel) are all excellent choices.

Austria Austria offers traditional Alpine villages, excellent ski culture, and generally more affordable prices than Switzerland or France. St Anton am Arlberg, Kitzbühel, and the Arlberg region are standout destinations.

Italy Italy's Dolomites offer dramatic scenery and a distinctive ski culture. Cortina d'Ampezzo (host of 2026 Winter Olympics Alpine events), Alta Badia, and the Sella Ronda circuit are highlights. Generally less expensive than French or Swiss destinations.

Insurance for European Skiing

Why European Ski Insurance is Essential

Despite Europe's reputation as a developed, safe region, the costs of uninsured ski injuries in Switzerland, France, or Austria can be substantial.

**Switzerland**: Consistently one of the world's most expensive countries for medical treatment. Mountain rescue in the Swiss Alps: CHF 5,000–20,000. Serious injury hospitalisation: CHF 30,000–100,000+.

**France**: Mountain rescue through the PGHM (mountain gendarmerie) and helicopter services: €2,000–€15,000. Hospital treatment at private rates for non-EU visitors can exceed €100,000 for serious injuries.

**Austria**: Rescue services are well-equipped and efficient. Costs for international visitors without insurance: €2,000–€10,000 for rescue, plus hospital charges.

Health Cards and Reciprocal Agreements

New Zealand does not have reciprocal healthcare agreements with Switzerland, France, or Austria. European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) are available only to EU/EEA citizens and do not apply to New Zealanders.

This means all medical costs in European ski destinations are charged at private international rates for New Zealand visitors. Unlimited medical cover is essential.

Off-Piste in Europe

European ski resorts have extensive off-piste terrain, and much of what draws experienced skiers to the Alps — particularly in Chamonix, Val d'Isère, and Verbier — is off-piste terrain. Off-piste cover is essential for anyone planning to venture beyond the marked piste in Europe.

Getting to Europe for Skiing

**From Auckland**: Flying to Europe requires 24–30+ hours of travel, typically via Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, or a one-stop via Asia. Key arrival airports for skiing: - Geneva (GVA): Access to French and Swiss Alps - Milan Malpensa (MXP): Access to Italian Dolomites - Innsbruck (INN): Direct access to Austrian Tyrol - Salzburg (SZG): Access to Salzburg region and Austrian resorts

When to Go

European ski season runs December through April, with variations by resort: - **Christmas/New Year**: Peak demand, premium prices - **January/February**: Best snow reliability, good weather, busy - **March**: Often excellent conditions, particularly at high altitude. Spring sun makes conditions enjoyable - **April**: Late season at lower resorts; high altitude and glacier resorts extend well into May
