Mt Ruapehu — Whakapapa & Turoa
Ski on an active volcano — New Zealand's largest ski area
🛡️ Insurance Note
Mt Ruapehu's volcanic status means the area can be subject to lahar or volcanic activity closures. Check whether your travel insurance covers trip cancellation due to volcanic activity — not all policies do.
Why You Need Insurance for Mt Ruapehu — Whakapapa & Turoa
Skiing on Mt Ruapehu — an active stratovolcano in the heart of the North Island — is one of New Zealand's most unique outdoor experiences. The mountain's twin ski areas, Whakapapa and Turoa, collectively form New Zealand's largest ski area, with terrain spread across both the north and south faces of the volcano.
Whakapapa vs Turoa
The two ski areas on Ruapehu offer contrasting experiences:
Whakapapa (North Face): The larger of the two fields, with more extensive lift infrastructure and the widest variety of terrain. Home to the iconic Happy Valley learner area and challenging upper mountain terrain including the Top of the Bruce. Whakapapa is operated by Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL).
Turoa (South Face): Consistently rated for its reliable snow coverage and wide, groomed runs. Turoa holds the distinction of having New Zealand's highest chairlift. The terrain suits intermediate and advanced skiers particularly well.
The Volcanic Factor
Skiing on an active volcano creates a unique insurance consideration: volcanic disruption. Mt Ruapehu has a history of eruptive activity, and the Crater Lake on the summit poses a lahar (volcanic mudflow) risk. The mountain has been closed for eruptive activity on multiple occasions in recent decades.
Standard travel insurance may not cover trip cancellation due to volcanic activity — this is often treated as a "known risk" once a volcano is in an elevated alert phase. Check your policy's volcanic activity exclusions and consider whether your specific travel dates present any known risk.
Tongariro National Park The surrounding Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Winter visitors can combine skiing with the world-famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing (weather permitting in winter) for an unforgettable alpine experience.
