Ski travel insurance is a travel insurance policy that specifically includes snow sports cover for skiing, snowboarding, and related winter activities. Standard travel insurance policies exclude skiing and snowboarding as they are classified as adventure sports. To be covered on the slopes — for medical emergencies, helicopter evacuation, equipment, and trip disruption — you must select a policy with a snow sports add-on or purchase a specialist ski travel insurance product. What Ski Travel Insurance Covers
A comprehensive ski travel insurance policy covers: emergency medical treatment for skiing injuries overseas (unlimited cover is standard across most NZ providers); helicopter rescue and evacuation from the ski field to hospital; medical repatriation back to New Zealand after serious injury; ski equipment — cover for loss, theft, or accidental damage to skis, boards, boots, and outerwear; ski hire costs if your own equipment is lost or stolen; piste closure compensation when lifts are shut due to weather; trip cancellation before departure; and 24/7 emergency assistance. How Much Does Ski Travel Insurance Cost?
Ski travel insurance for a 7-day domestic NZ ski trip starts from around $29 per person. For international ski trips, prices vary by destination: Japan (7 days) from approximately $180–$350 per person; Canada (10 days) from $250–$450; Europe (14 days) from $280–$500. Age, pre-existing medical conditions, and the level of cover selected all affect the final premium. Choosing the Right Policy
When comparing ski travel insurance, prioritise: unlimited overseas medical cover — this is the single most important element; helicopter rescue explicitly included in the policy; snow sports activities covered that match your planned activities (on-piste, off-piste, heli-ski); equipment cover limit adequate for your gear value; and 24/7 emergency assistance. Do not choose a policy based on premium alone — a lower premium with capped medical cover of $500,000 provides far less protection than unlimited cover for a modest premium increase.
