How Family Ski Insurance Works

Most NZ travel insurance providers allow children to be included on a parent's policy at no additional cost, provided they are travelling with a parent or legal guardian for 100% of the trip. Cover-More, 1Cover, and SCTI all offer family or group pricing that includes dependent children. Always confirm the definition of "dependent child" in your specific policy — age limits, residency requirements, and whether stepchildren qualify vary between providers.

Children and Ski Injuries

Children learning to ski face a higher fall frequency than experienced adult skiers, but typically sustain less serious injuries due to lower speeds and body weight. The most common paediatric ski injuries include wrist fractures, forearm fractures, and knee ligament sprains in older teenagers. For family trips overseas, ensure that your policy provides the same unlimited medical cover for children as for adults — some budget policies apply lower limits to dependent children.

Equipment Cover for Families

A family's ski equipment — multiple sets of skis, boards, helmets, boots, and outerwear — can represent a significant total value. Check that your policy's equipment cover limit applies per-person (not as a total family limit) or that the total limit is sufficient for all family members combined. Many families choose to hire equipment at the resort rather than travel with gear, which reduces equipment insurance requirements but introduces hire equipment excess cover as a consideration.

Cancellation Cover for Family Trips

Family ski trips typically involve significant prepaid costs: flights, accommodation, lift passes, ski school for children, and hire equipment deposits. Cancellation cover protects these costs if illness, injury, or other covered events prevent travel. Ensure your cancellation cover limit is adequate for the total upfront cost of your family trip — not just the insurance premium reference amount. Most NZ providers allow you to select a cancellation cover level when purchasing.
